An Early Analysis of the Impact of ChatGPT on Education
Nanda Ganesan
Abstract

The recently released ChatGPT and its updated GPT-4 chatbots have caught the attention of educators as a controversial technology in education. The reaction has primarily been ambivalent, although positive comments have emerged recently. The main concern is that ChatGPT can be used for plagiarism that cannot be detected by plagiarism detection tools such as Turnitin. Educators have started debating how to address the use of ChatGPT by students in their assignments. This paper lists a few AI-based chatbots, such as ChatGPT, that can impact education. It is followed by a review of the recent opinions of educators on ChatGPT. A discussion of the pros and cons of GPT is then presented. Finally, the paper concludes by expressing the authors' views on using ChatGPT in education. In particular, the authors suggest that ChatGPT can be a helpful learning tool that students and educators will invariably embrace. Those instructors who foresee the value of ChatGPT as a learning tool would likely adjust their curriculums to take advantage of AI tools to enhance the students' learning experiences. The role and acceptance of ChatGPT in education are, however, too early to predict at this time with any degree of certainty.
