Medicaid Beneficiaries and HCV in Kentucky
Bakeerathan Gunaratnam
Abstract

Hepatitis C is a viral hepatic infection caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C is the deadliest infectious disease in the U.S., affecting approximately 2.5 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and killing more Americans every year than all other infectious diseases, including HIV, combined. Meanwhile, Kentucky has the highest hepatitis C infection rate in the United States. Most people with HCV (70%–85%) develop a chronic infection, which is a serious disease that can result in long-term health problems (i.e., liver failure, hepatocellular carcinoma), incur significant attributable costs, and even result in death. Unfortunately, many people infected with HCV never receive treatment for their disease, despite the availability and overwhelming effectiveness of current treatments. In this talk, I will discuss the screening, treatment rate, and demographic information associated with HCV for the population of Medicaid beneficiaries in Kentucky.
