Past and Present Views of Cannabis in the Indian Subcontinent
Abstract
Cannabis (Vijaya) is one of the few natural products obtained from a plant source that is still utilized due to its multipurpose value. Common people in the Subcontinent have used Vijaya (Cannabis) for ritual, healing, and commercial purposes. The cause behind the sustained current use may be that various Cannabis species can be grown readily in the Subcontinent environment and due to the lack of strict regulations. This study ventures into the Traditional, Cultural, and Nutraceutical Aspects of “Vijaya (Cannabis)” in the Indian Subcontinent. Literature was acquired from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus using the following search terms Cannabis, Vijaya, India, Indian Subcontinent, in June 2022. The results will reveal the countless ritualistic uses, prophylactic/therapeutic efficacies, and nutraceutical and commercial values.
