Abstract

Particularly, the use of natural products, botanicals and alternative medicines seems to be very promising to delay the onset and progression of neurodegenerative and other age-related diseases. The botanicals used that show these promising results are ‘well-known anti-inflammatory or antioxidant agents with a good tolerability and safety profile’. An important botanical used historically as a prophylactic and in medical treatments is American Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora). This botanical was ‘traditionally used by Native Americans and Europeans as a nerve tonic, sedative, and anticonvulsant’. This study evaluated the potential therapeutic impacts of American Skullcap against neurodegenerative and other age-related diseases. Literature searches were done through PubMed and Google Scholar in February 2022. Due to its specific bioactive constituents, American Skullcap has a prophylactic and therapeutic effects with the potential to prevent & treat neurodegenerative and other age-related diseases.
