A Magic velvet Bean: an ancient botanical used as levodopa in advanced Parkinson's disease
Abstract
Abstract:
Today healthcare system has an importance on the standard guideline-based physical and mental healthcare maintenance, trying to dissuade premature mortality and enhance the quality of life. Affordable, applicable, and practical pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are required to achieve these healthcare goals. One of the great ways to achieve it is to repurpose approved synthetic drugs and natural products, and it is a beneficial therapeutic strategy to treat acute and chronic disease states. This method currently embodies a progressively promising medical and clinical approach to accelerate the efforts and headway in drug discovery and development procedures for treating acute and chronic medical conditions. Mucuna pruriens could be an excellent product for this cause. It contains levodopa, alkaloids, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and other bioactive natural substances. Mucuna pruriens (Fabaceae) is an established herbal used from the Ayurvedic period to the current times. The hypothesis would be "Mucuna pruriens can increase the dopaminergic neurotransmission and exert neuroprotective effects due to the presence of its potent bioactive." The research question investigates the probable prophylactic and therapeutic effects of Mucuna pruriens. A literature search with key terms, such as "Mucuna pruriens" and "therapeutic, prophylactic use", was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar through April 2022. Mucuna pruriens significantly increases the dopaminergic neurotransmission in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Thus, used to treat disease states that occur due to decreased dopaminergic neurotransmission. Furthermore, it can also provide significant neuroprotective effects. Mucuna pruriens can be a Magic velvet Bean to prevent and improve global healthcare.
