Abstract

Introduction: Worm infestation is a major health issue in children from developing countries due to poor sanitary and unhygienic conditions. Unawareness about deworming among parents is a widespread challenge in India which is fueled by misinformation and mistrust, particularly in rural and village areas.  These areas are where the maximum population resides which makes children in such areas more vulnerable to infection. Therefore, it is important to assess the practices and knowledge of parents in these areas related to deworming which will considerably improve in checking the spread of infection and overall improve the health of children.

Aim: To explore the understanding and perception regarding deworming practices among parents of young and adolescent children (1-17 years old) in Devli Village, South Delhi, India.

Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on the parents in Devli Village, South Delhi, India. The sample size was calculated using Slovin’s formula. A pretested, valid & reliable semi-structured questionnaire was used to elicit variables such as frequency of deworming, parental perception, knowledge, awareness & practices regarding deworming among parents. All the parents who are residents of the study site provided consent to participate in the study. Multivariate data analysis was done using the SPSS software version 26.

Result: Nearly half of the parents (47%) were aware of deworming while only 37.5% of their children have been dewormed. The frequency of deworming was found to be more in children less than 12 years of age. A substantially considerable number of the parents (92.5%) saw deworming as an important practice and about 30% of the parents follow the regular deworming practices for their children.

Conclusion: The frequency of deworming practices among parents is found to be low to moderate in an urban village in South Delhi, India. This was mainly due to a lack of awareness of health issues. The current study emphasizes the consequence of escalating deworming efforts, as well as sensitization and health education for parents.
