Student Perceptions of Online Teaching
Nanda Ganesan
Abstract

As a result of the lockdown imposed by COVID, online learning has come to the forefront of learning in higher learning institutions. To continue with the uninterrupted education of their students, many universities embarked on conducting synchronous online education as a remedy to avoid closing down the schools. The approach these schools took was to teach their classes synchronously using Zoom. The faculty members were given accelerated training in using computing resources available to conduct the online courses on Zoom. While most classes were conducted synchronously on Zoom, some classes were conducted in the asynchronous and fully online mode. These classes were already designed to be delivered online and were being taught in the online mode prior to Covid. When the Covid restrictions gradually eased, a new paradigm emerged: synchronous zoom-based courses, hybrid courses, and fully online courses now exist as a regular mix of courses offered. Over the last few years, the students have been exposed to different learning modalities. Given that the students have had adequate experience with different learning modalities, their perceptions of the modalities of learning are examined in this paper. A survey was conducted in a business school to understand the preferences of the students. A cross-section of students from different majors and levels of standings, such as freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior, were included in the survey. The paper discusses the surprising finding that a majority of the students preferred the face-to-face learning mode. The feedback received and analyzed is presented in this paper. An attempt is also made to explain reasons for the preference expressed by most students to attend face-to-face classes, although the conventional wisdom was to assume that the students would have chosen online learning as their first choice because of its convenience.
