Impacts of External Factors on On-Road Emissions in Montgomery County, Ohio
Jalen Smith
Abstract
With mobile vehicles becoming an inevitable human need, transportation-related emissions of criteria pollutants and greenhouse gases have grown. Hence, it is crucial to study traffic activities to understand and reduce these toxic emissions that could impact human health and the environment. This study focused on how two external factors,COVID-19 and Ukraine Invasion, impacted transportation, thus the air quality in the USA between 2019 and 2022. This study was focused on the air quality in an Ohio county, Montgomery County. EPA’s Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) was used with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODoT) data on a particular day in June between 2019 and 2022 to study this impact. The on-road motor vehicles were considered into two categories, gasoline-run passenger cars and diesel-driven trucks. The study was done at I-75 and I-70 interstate intersections.
