Providing Free Dental Check-ups for the World
Kartik Balasundaram
Abstract

2.3 billion people suffer from oral health issues, and more than 530 million children suffer from oral health issues of primary teeth. It is a problem that is not being addressed because of how expensive oral health care is. Oral health issues have been proven to be linked to the quality of a person’s overall health. Many individuals, including 33% of Canadians and North Americans, forgo dental visits, due to fear of the dentist, lack of affordability, or lack of time to see a dentist. Snapsmile is building an AI model that can detect dental issues, similar to a Dentist’s visual examination. This would provide free Visual Dental check-ups for anyone that has access to a smartphone.

Snapsmile uses image recognition technology to identify dental issues. This model is being trained with images that were annotated by Dentists. Snapsmile can bring access to a service which ranges anywhere from $50USD to $300USD globally - for completely free. Once snapsmile’s AI model improves, it gives us the ability to make personalized recommendations to people, and ultimately paves a new way of how patients interact with their oral health.
