Abstract

Background: The Global Health Talk Series is a student-run initiative facilitated by the Tamil Association of Residents and Medical Students to deepen the knowledge base of medical students about multidisciplinary approaches to global health (GH) issues and challenges. This study summarizes the results of a program evaluation of the TARMS virtual co-curricular global health program, an ongoing initiative designed to provide medical students exposure to fundamental global health concepts and opportunities to learn from experts in the field.

Methods: The evaluation covers a one-year period and is based on a survey of 31 participants in the virtual curriculum, using an anonymous online questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyze students' perspectives.

Results: Of the 31 respondents, 20 (65%) were from the Faculty of Medicine with 9 (45%) Canadian medical students and 11 (55%) International medical students. The remaining 3 (10%) were graduate students and 8 (26%) undergraduate students. Students agreed or strongly agreed that the program positively impacted their education experience and the information presented was beneficial (96%, 94% respectively). Many expressed satisfaction with the online version of the program and had a positive overall experience (100%, 97% respectively). Qualitative data showed students identifying three broad themes: student participation/satisfaction/educational impact, logistics of the virtual curriculum including communication and technology, and perceived benefits of the program for competency development.

Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that the TARMS Global Health program met its original objectives by providing students with opportunities to learn about various themes of Global Health virtually. This program may be an important addition to medical education as it leverages the use of technology and international collaboration to enable global health learning.
