Circulating tumor cells in monitoring breast cancer
Abstract
Circulating tumor cells are shed into the blood from the primary tumor and the metastatic tumor deposits in patients. They are extremely rare and estimated to be present at a frequency of one tumor cell in a billion blood cells. Therefore their enrichment poses a technical challenge. During this presentation, we will discuss the technologies used to enrich tumor cells circulating in the blood of breast cancer patients and how this can be used for monitoring disease and making cell lines.
