Abstract

With the recent rise of vaccine hesitancy in Canada and the United States, it is difficult to separate credible information from falsifications. Understanding the reasons behind COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in the South Asian population is a key step to dismantling any misinformation being spread, and providing credible information about the vaccine.

A research study conducted by Grifith et al. (2021) indicated that there are six “major themes concerning vaccine hesitancy: safety, political skepticism, influence from authority figures, a lack of knowledge, legal liability [...] [and] medical legacies.” Safety was the population's largest concern, “centered around the worry that the vaccine would cause more harm than good.”. Another concern was that “the vaccine was not tested enough due to political pressures to reopen the economy.” A large portion of the population was influenced by the politics in the United States, and rumours about demand to approve vaccines quickly. The population also described “the legacy of harm caused by health care institutions that have traditionally targeted the Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) community and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+ (LGBTQ+) community.” Many Canadians highlighted how these marginalized groups have been targeted, and how this mistreatment may continue when getting their vaccine. Unfortunately, there is a lack of research and representation of the South Asian community. In fact, in a survey done by Khubchandani et al (2021) in the United States with regards to the COVID -19 vaccine hesitancy found that the majority of those who took the survey were of Caucasian descent.

The South Asian COVID Trust Project intends to alleviate any stress, or skepticism toward taking the COVID-19 vaccine. This campaign aims to focus on the vaccines being distributed in Canada, and the United States including the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and AstraZeneca vaccines. The campaign seeks to address any vaccine hesitancy through various forms of media including infographics, and videos. Creating and distributing a survey to the South Asian population, gives South Asians the ability to voice their concerns with respect to the vaccine. This campaign plans to provide the South Asian community with evidence based data, to promote awareness on the safety of these vaccinations.
