Environmental Communication: Bridging the Divide Between Scientific Knowledge and Public Awareness
Ajantha Nadesalingam
Abstract

Climate change is an urgent global issue. Thus, it is vital that individuals, communities, and nations take effective action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. However, general members of the public are exposed to specific environmental issues without understanding their significance in the broader environmental context. Though there is an accumulation of scientific evidence about environmental sustainability, there remains a divide between the scientific literature and the public. Thus, an important question arises: how can this scientific environmental information be communicated effectively with the public? This presentation will examine the scientific literature surrounding effective environmental communication. In particular, this presentation will elucidate scientifically rigorous, evidence-based tools to communicate environmental science to the public.

Key words: science communication, environmental communication, scientific expertise communication with general public
