Abstract

Objective of the present study is to determine the novel application of the plant in pharmaceuticals and as an agricultural resource. The present analysis is an effort to illustrate phytochemicals, diverse common applications and Cissus quadrangularis L. pharmacological reports especially in  bone healing management.

Cissus quadrangularis Linn has been in the recent past, gaining intense popularity due to its anti-arthritic effects. One of this therapeutic agent's most salient features is that it is associated with more health benefits than the conventional treatment modalities available. One of the agent's notable health benefits is that it leads to a considerable alleviation of the arthritic symptoms without causing the many individual symptoms.  Cissus quadrangularis Linn is gaining popularity due to its bone healing and anti-inflammatory activities. One of the postulated ways the agent was seen to cause the relief of symptoms was through the induction of proliferation, matrix mineralization, and the differentiation of the human osteoblastic cells. These combined effects serve an essential role in preventing cartilage destruction and bone sclerosis, which are vital in the pathogenesis of arthritis .

Further, the plant extract also functions in other ways, such as it leads to a considerable reduction in the prostaglandins production arthritis. The prostaglandins, being vital bioactive amines in the body, are essential in the causation of the symptomatology seen in arthritis.

The reduction of prostaglandins production is critical in relieving the individual's symptoms since the prostaglandins act on the nerve endings, leading to the pain usually experienced by arthritic patients .Further, the Cissus quadrangularis Linn has some chondroprotective effects. It results in a notable reduction in the reactive oxygen species' production that plays a central role in the cartilage destruction in osteoarthritic individuals. In addition to the chondroprotective role, it also results in the inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines and the induction of cartilage regeneration in individuals. Some of the proinflammatory agents that are inhibited by the Cissus quadrangularis Linn include the interleukin one beta. The inhibition of that agents has been shown to result in a notable improvement of symptoms among individuals .Thus, the central postulated mechanisms of action for Cissus quadrangularis Linn in producing the anti-arthritic effect are majorly based on their ability to inhibit the prostaglandin production, inhibit interleukin one beta and decrease the production of reactive oxygen species. Further, Cissus quadrangularis Linn leads to an enhancement in cartilage regeneration, which is crucial in reversing arthritis's destructive effects .
