Women in STEM Leadership Program: Building Resilience and Rising High Workshop
Nirusha Thavarajah, Arunthi Thiagalingam, Phanikiran Radhakrishnan
Abstract

Despite the increase in women entering careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), there is still an under-representation of women in STEM leadership positions. Understanding the challenges women face in reaching leadership positions is the essential first step in finding the right strategies to tackle the issues.

Gender equality in leadership positions allows for diverse perspectives in decision making that is beneficial to our communities and economy. Many research studies identify prejudice, implicit biases, discrimination, hostile work environments and family demands as the major career advancement barriers for women. Women with equal merits as their male counterparts are often delayed in being promoted or to receive a raise. Women who speak up or are not hesitant to share their insights are often viewed as abrasive rather than assertive. Family demands interrupt women from engaging in professional and social networking that is essential to their career advancement.

Addressing the intersectionality of the barriers mentioned above through the lens of racialized perspectives and intercultural experiences can help us move forward. The co-presenters of this workshop will share their stories, ambition, and hard decisions they had to make in their personal and professional lives. Participants will have a chance to reflect on the session and engage in the post presentation activity and discussion. The intention is to inspire young women to pursue their dreams with authenticity.
