Virtual Tools to Enhance Student Engagement in an Online Learning Environment
Nirusha Thavarajah, Nanda Kumar Ganesan
Abstract

It is now more than one year since the global COVID-19 pandemic confronted all higher education institutions around the globe to change the mode of teaching and learning. These unprecedented changes have forced instructors to re-think the delivery of the curriculum while sustaining the rigor. Many universities and colleges were forced to switch to fully online or hybrid models. This paper intends to outline some virtual teaching tools explored to enhance student engagement. The presentation will give an overview of the use of synchronous and asynchronous lectures and tutorials, online writing assignments, discussion boards, oral presentations, lab skills videos, virtual experiments, online office hours, cloud notebooks, and an alternative LMS hosting platform to enhance student engagement in an online learning environment. For the most part, the tools have been used by two instructors teaching online courses at two different universities, one in Canada and the other in the USA. The co-presenters will share their experience in using the different tools and their impact on student learning. The conclusion reached is that the tools can effectively promote student engagement in an otherwise passive online learning environment.
