Abstract

Background: Anemia, a major public health problem and high in young Indian women reflects their social and biological vulnerability. Just increasing knowledge and awareness of good nutrition practices rarely leads to sustained behavior change. Also a persistent change in behavior is unlikely to be achieved through a single activity. A gap in knowledge exists to observe a sustained change in behaviour in young women when multiple approaches are used as behavioral modification to fight anemia. This study thus aimed to design an inter professional education (IPE) module and evaluate the impact of this module to bring about behavioral modifications in women to combat anemia.

Methodology: A Cross sectional, cohort study was planned and Interprofessional (IP) team (medical faculty, health care workers, social workers, Engineers, government officials, factory management staff, medical students) was formed. Young women aged between 18-49 years working in a Garment factory Davangere, India participated. Knowledge was assessed by pre validated questionnaire. The IPE module designed comprised of a multiple intervention process comprising of Group education, one on one nutritional counseling, video clipping, &Community mobilization. This IPE module intervened to 100 women for 6 months as a weekly program at the beginning of each month. Pre and post IPE module intervention, hemoglobin was measured and structured questionnaires were administered to evaluate any behavioral modifications.

Results: Majority (~75%) of young women lacked the knowledge on anemia. On intervention significant and positive changes were observed in hemoglobin and behaviors patterns of women.

Conclusion: IP team work could address public health issues effectively & increase social commitment of health care workers and general population.
